Data scientist and entrepreneur Michael Li recently crawled over one million website home pages and analyzed the top 1,000 to analyze every aspect of the websites, from images and layout to font and color, to find out whether there is a science behind what makes good design.
Some of his findings:
- Use sans serif fonts for website copy (93% of websites use a sans-serif font for body copy)
- But it’s ok to use serif fonts for headings (which fits with the conventional wisdom that larger fonts are better suited for serif than smaller fonts)
- Type size is remarkably consistent at 14-16px
